About Opportunity Maine

Opportunity Maine is a non-profit, non-partisan organization working to build sustainable economic prosperity in Maine. The organization was founded out of a citizen's initiative designed to make college affordable. We started with an idea, worked to craft a sound policy and then collected more than 72,000 signatures to get that legislation onto the ballot. In the end, the strong public and media support translated into strong legislative support. Our bill passed straight through the Legislature with a unanimous vote from the House of Representatives!

 

In January of this year, the Opportunity Maine idea became the Opportunity Maine Program meaning Mainers across the state can now afford to enroll in and graduate from college. We are working to ensure every eligible Mainer knows about and enrolls in the Program!

 

About the Opportunity Maine Program

The new Opportunity Maine Program will make college more affordable for Maine students. Beginning with any loans that a student takes in January 2008, he or she will be eligible to claim a state income tax credit against their student loan payments each year. Businesses are also eligible for the tax credit if they agree to pay a students’ loan.

To be eligible, graduates must work and pay taxes in Maine after they finish school. If you want to leave the state, your tax credit will be available to if and you when you return for the time you're here.
